Est. 1968. Founded in San Fransisco, CA. The first line created by Susi and Doug Thompkins (also cofounders of The North Face). They met when Doug was hitch-hiking and three years later, were married. They started Esprit in their apartment and initially sold their initial collection out of a VW bus. It surged in popularity in the US in the 1980s and 1990s. With its colorful sweatshirts and signature three-stripes "E," Esprit was one of the biggest brands of the late 20th century.
After leaving the US in 2011, Esprit relaunched in 2023 in small market pop-up stores and received an amazing response. Esprit is colorful and lively, close to home and authentic – and characterized by the Californian way of life. It’s not only iconic for writing fashion history. The brand is in search of dialogue; it involves people – and takes a stand. A principle Esprit has remained true to, to this very day.
Esprit is cool because they did things far before their time as a brand, like featuring "real people" who work in their retail stores in their ad campaigns and speaking up for employees and customers in social issues.
